Sadly, as we post this on the 12th day of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence, we know that suicide is now the leading cause of death for Australian men aged 15 to 44. Men make up an average of six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll. Research shows that traditional masculine values like toughness and emotional stoicism, along with the desire not to burden others, are barriers that prevent men from seeking help when they’re struggling mentally. And when men spiral into depression, isolation and on to the pathway to suicide, the barriers become even bigger.
