Healthy Eating – a gendered issue
All Integrated Health Promotion Agencies funded by the Department of Health in Hume region are required to contribute to the Hume’s regional health promotion priority of Healthy Eating.
Women’s Health Goulburn North East is contributing to this priority area by undertaking research into Healthy Eating and examining current literature through a gendered lens.
Women are often referred to as the ‘gatekeepers’ of family food consumption, with gender roles assigning the purchasing, preparation and decision making of family eating habits to women. Women consistently earn less than men, engage in employment that is associated with a lower income or predominately part time work. Women are also the primary care givers of young children, disabled and older adults. Lower income, greater care giving and food consumption responsibilities place increasing pressure on women and thus make healthy eating a gendered issue.
Women’s Health will use information gathered to assist local government and organisations to improve the wellbeing of women by increasing their ability to consume a healthy diet.
